Advocacy: Save the Ferry
The Downtown District Alliance supports the Save the Ferry Coalition and its efforts to restore and expand ferry service between Newburgh and Beacon. Reliable waterfront access is essential to the continued growth and vitality of downtown Newburgh, connecting residents, visitors, workers, and businesses on both sides of the Hudson River.
The coalition is currently raising funds to launch a weekend pilot ferry program operating Fridays through Sundays from mid-June through October aboard the Nellie Bly, a 40-passenger vessel provided by New York Boat Co. The effort recently gained significant momentum with a pledge of up to $100,000 from the Orange County Industrial Development Agency.
Since the MTA permanently discontinued ferry service following damage to the Beacon dock and ongoing operational challenges, local leaders, residents, and business owners have continued advocating for its return. Expanded commuter shuttle buses have helped fill part of the gap, but ferry service remains a critical link for economic activity, tourism, and regional connectivity.
For downtown Newburgh businesses, the ferry represents more than transportation — it is an important gateway that brings visitors directly into the heart of the city’s waterfront and downtown district. The Alliance believes restoring ferry access can help strengthen local commerce, increase foot traffic, and reinforce Newburgh’s identity as a vibrant Hudson Valley destination.
The Downtown District Alliance applauds the coalition, volunteers, elected officials, and community advocates who continue pushing for both the pilot program and the long-term restoration of permanent ferry service.
