Advocacy: George Washington Headquarters
Expanding Access to the George Washington Headquarters Grounds
The Downtown District Alliance is advocating for expanded public access to the grounds of the George Washington's Headquarters State Historic Site, one of Newburgh’s most important historic and cultural landmarks.
As the nation approaches America’s 250th anniversary, the site serves as a powerful reminder of Newburgh’s role in Revolutionary War history while also offering valuable open space for residents and visitors alike. With its scenic Hudson River views, green space, and proximity to downtown neighborhoods, the Headquarters grounds have the potential to become a more active and accessible community asset.
The Alliance is encouraging consistent public access from dawn to dusk, noting that expanded hours would create greater opportunities for recreation, cultural programming, education, and community connection. Current seasonal operating hours limit accessibility for many residents, particularly working families, commuters, and youth.
Advocates also point to the broader community benefits of increased park access, including improved public health, stronger social connections, environmental justice, enhanced public safety through increased activity, and positive economic impacts for nearby small businesses throughout downtown and the waterfront district.
By making the grounds more accessible, the George Washington Headquarters can further strengthen its role as a civic gathering space that connects history, nature, tourism, and community life in the heart of Newburgh.
The Downtown District Alliance looks forward to continued conversations with residents, local organizations, and state partners about ways to responsibly expand access while preserving and celebrating this historic site for future generations.
